For his first appearance in Batman #1, the Joker was introduced with no origin story existing. Detective Comics #168 disclosed that the Joker was the offender called the Red Hood falling into a vat of chemicals, which makes him the Joker that everybody has known him to be.
The Joker's facial nerves are paralyzed, making him look like he's perpetually smiling, an expression called a"rictus smile". Nails and his green hair, his lips, and his skin are directly due to chemical exposure. The Joker's face is also damaged from scarring in the form of a smile that was horrible.
The Joker says that the only way to leave the city is by boat and threatens that his principles will take over the city. Joker subsequently gives a test to the taxpayers on two ferries (among these filled with incarcerated criminals) he's rigged with bombs, but every ferry is given a detonator to the other vessel, giving the the choice to either blow up the other vessel or spare them, however when neither leaves an option, both will be destroyed. Joker is finally stopped by the Batman who throws him over the edge of a structure, Joker while hanging upside down over the edge states to Batman that they are destined to do so indefinitely and tells him about the location of Dent, saying he attracted Dent"down to our level" as Batman goes to locate Dent, the police detain the Joker as he whined in success. This Joker was performed by the Heath Ledger.
